Best photoshop guides 1

I'm not sure I wanted to know exactly how much time I've spend looking for photoshop guides, tutorials and help online if I could find out.

Some good has come out of it though, thank god, and that is, this extensive list of photoshop tutorials, which I'll share with you folks:

Photoshop tutorial: creating a water man

Photoshop tutorial: adding rain to a photo

Photoshop tutorial: how to create a circle polyorama

Photoshop tutorial: masking an image

Photoshop tutorial: fixing blown out skin

Photoshop tutorial: imitating stage light - video guide

Photoshop tutorial: understanding skin retouching regarding LIGHT

Photoshop tutorial: Skin cleanup

Photoshop tutorial: dragan effect video guide

What goes for these as well as all tutorials, is that they work as guides, not answers to how it's done. Use them knowing that these were not made with YOUR picture in the work room - the values might not fit exactly, the colors may be a bit off, and it may end up looking less than decent on your own photos. So use these tutorials as guides to understanding the tools and ways of work in photoshop in order to achieve whatever you might be looking for - and most important of all - play around in photoshop - it's the best way to improve.

Posters – Movie posters!

I don't know when it happened, but I guess, I've always been quite fascinated with movie posters. They've always seemed to gather the best of photography, Graphics, Usage of fonts and punchlines such as "They went too far".

So at some point I decided to do a few myself. Most of them were copying famous posters:

I'll post some of them here - You guys try to guess which ones are copycats.

Oh, and feel free to suggest me to copy new ones.

Ice Ice baby

That's it, it's finally come to this.

Hell has frozen over. Hell being Copenhagen, not because it's a terrible place, but because Copenhagen is hosting the metalfestival http://copenhell.com/?page_id=161 with prominent names such as Megadeth and Deftones, and of course the danish Supercharger - yeah, I did their press photos - I Rock. But back to the freezing - It's still cold as hell here in Copenhagen - 3 consecutive months with snow and frost kinda makes you think - Is this global warming just another publicity stunt? Is the sequel to The day after tomorrow coming perhaps?

Nevertheless, I got all inspired and dug up some old shots with a freezing theme.

Upcoming shoots

Over the last few months, things have be laying low on the photography part.
This is partially because of the new job, but mostly because this freaking snow is killing me and my mobility!
I had a shoot planned in december, but it went awall since a few of the models canceled. Though having this planned in an inside location, I'm thinking about bringing this outside as my annual photo event in may.
I have a few random portrait shoots in my home studio - a man's gotta eat. Also, a photographer friend of mine is coming over soon. The plan is to shoot some photos of each other, mostly because I realized I have absolutely no photos of myself which resembles at all - and from time to time, that's needed I guess - plus, I get to show you guys the ugliest faces I can make.
Back on track.
In may, a british pinup model who has been featured on some tattoo magazine covers, will be coming over for a shoot. Gore and large dogs can be expected

Also, I've been talking back and forth with our danish Playboy, Barbara Zatler to do some fashion-ish stuff in the near future. Let's see how that works out.

After shooting some photos at Rachel Hjorts music video "I nat", I kinda ended up with a few job offers from the manager of the record company where she's signed. Nothing is settled though, but hopefully I get to follow in the steps of  http://www.tomace.dk/, who did some of their artwork and then afterwards hit it big (and is now doing covers and videos for Nick & Jay and L.O.C.

I'll keep you posted on that.

Amazons and spartans

Over the last few years, I've done some photo shoots. Well Duh, I'm calling myself a photographer, so it would be kinda stupid not to do any shoots.
But, what I mean is that I've done some larger photo shoots, which could be classified as photo events.

It started early 2008 where I decided to make a tribute to Frank Millers 300. I began writing down stupid ideas, and May that year, I had gathered a pack of friends, borrowed some way too large spartan equipment, and began strolling down the main shopping street of Copenhagen to our designated location.
We did photos in various spots in central Copenhagen, all extremely exited about what ended up as more of a performance art project than an actual photo shoot.

Oh - I had found out that there would be a freeze event at that very spot, so we kinda crashed their event as well - check it out below.

The event maker is playing a confused bystander (1.25), and asks some people what's going on. Their answer is: No, but look at the man with the helmet. A bit annoyed about the fact that our photo shoot is drawing more attention that his, he is forced to point out that people are actually standing completely still...
Flash mob - 0 Our Event - 1

After a banging success, I decided to do it again the week after, but this time, the group of involved people had grown from 12 to 22, and this time the theme was Amazons - sexy hot amazons.

Anders "popcorn" Madsen who was with us both the days, filmed the whole thing and made this video of it - Do enjoy:

And lastly, here are some "Behind-the-scenes" shots:

And a few of the finished one:

My first Tutorial

I decided to dig up a few old tutorials I had laying around on some of my photos.

Here is the first one for the photo Vampire Submerged

In this and the other tutorials, I will be using diagrams to illustrate light setups - it's a simple .Psd file which can be opened in photoshop. Get it here:

http://www.kevinkertz.com/

The finished image looks like this

I'll be doing a step-by-step guide on how I got to this point.

Here you can see the setup of the model, me and the lighting.

I shot it on a white backdrop, but it could have easily been done on a white wall.

The unedited shot looked like this, and yeah, actually still does:

As you can see, the hair is still doing crazy stuff on the original image, so I'm gonna have to reveal the secret of having a good and enduring model. Nynne, who posed for this shot, kept throwing her hair back, up , around and down for me - kudos sent her way.
If it all seems a bit gray, it's because I had a smoke machine on - but really, don't pay much attention to that - it just confused us more than it did anything good here.

But now, straight to the editing, which is more of less the essence of this shot.

What you see here is a screen shot of my inner most sanctum - the .psd file.

It's taken from when I made this tutorial in Danish, so the embedded comments on the left remain in Danish - I'll see if I can translate the most important stuff.

Take a minute to gaze over the layers, where most of them still have their original name.
There are some stock photos of textures used to get it a bit more grainy.
Color balance has been used to bring out the green glow.
Curves has been used to add contrast.

But aside from the overall adjustments, are the more specific ones applied to the image.

Each time I upon up an image, I duplicate the layer twice and make the lowest invisible. That way, no matter how much I screw up, I can always go back to the original. I start up with a new layer for Healing/Spothealing/ Clone tool to remove spots and small skin differences.
I merge that clone layer with the layer below with CTRL+E.
After that, I duplicate the layer again, so that I have 2 of the newly clonefixed layer and one original in the bottom.
After that I do as follows:

Filters - noise - dust and scratches - Radius 5, threshold 0.

Filters - blur - gaussian blur - 2pxl

Now I add a Layer mask which allows me to "paint" things off the layer with erasing it completely.
Use paint bucket and fill the layer mask with black - this way, all the effects just added dissappears, and you can paint them back on with a white brush. I'm doing this on the skin in this case.

When you are satisfied, merge the top two layers. If the skin remains a bit murky, repeat the process, but this time, use higher values in the gaussian blur.

Always Merge (ctrl+e) the top layers after this. At least, thats what I do.

Next step will be High Pass:

Filters - other - high pass:
In short terms, this effect will make outlines more visible, and in some cases, this can be used to make images sharper. We will now be using it to make it a bit cartoonish.
Depending on how much effect I want, I shift between 5 and 20 pxl and that in between.
Now put the blending mode of that last layer to overlay (soft light and hard light also works from time to time). Now adjust the opacity to control how much the effect shows. You can also add a layer mask in order to paint away that effect.

All in all, this should provide a look into how a fairly simple image shot in a living room can turn into a vampire submerged.

PS. Her teeth has been done with liquify tool.

(just found out that it has been featured in an online magazine - page 204)
